Box Cars and Trains

Who says you need to buy new toys to entertain kids?  The idea for this fun homemade toy came from my kids.  We had gotten a delivery in an Amazon box and Little C crawled in and sat down.  If you have more than one kid you can guess what happened next.  Her sisters, A and B started arguing about who was going to sit in the box.  So off to the garage I trudged to look for some more boxes.  I found a few and each girl now had her own box.

My older kids got some Frisbees (which I have not told them how to use for fear of them flying through the house.  They think the Frisbees are plates and they play with them in the kitchen) used them as steering wheels while they pretended to drive around.  I gave C a plate so she could drive too.

A racing along.

I was pleased that the girls were playing so nicely that I decided to give them some fancier cars.  I made some wheels by tracing one of the plates in the play kitchen onto some black construction paper.  I also made some headlights by tracing a toy bracelet onto white construction paper.  I decided to add a racing stripe and cut out a strip of yellow construction paper.  You can bling out this car as much as you want.  I kept it pretty basic but I would love to hear your ideas for car decorating.

Look at my little racers.

The girls were very happy with the cars and played with them for a while. We ended up using them for a few days.  Then, one morning, B found the cars and moved them over to the fireplace.  "I made a train!" She was so thrilled and her sisters were quick to get on board.

I wish I could say I would have thought of making the train.  I do after all have a blog about fun games and activities for kids.  But it took a 3 year old to come up with this idea.  But I was smart enough to take a picture!

  5. Super super cute! And looks like so much fun! I KNOW I would have LOVED this when I was a child. I'm going to have to remember this one! When I was little my sister and I had a play table that we would pretend was on a train and it was very high class - we were served our food and drinks and everything. Good memories! :)
