Looking for 4th of July desserts? Today I will share some patriotic cupcakes we made for the 4th of July. They can easily be adapted to any day by just changing the colors of food coloring used.
You will need:
- Frosting - vanilla or white
- Food Coloring
- Candy Melts (optional)
Prepare you favorite cupcake recipe as directed. My favorite does not happen to be a box mix, but I was short on time.
After I prepared the batter, I wondered what would happen if I placed a candy melt inside of each cupcake. Would it melt and solidify again when cooled? I had no idea but I figured what's the worst that could happen?
I pushed a candy melt into the center of each cupcake and soon it became covered with the batter.
When the cupcakes are done and have cooled off, it's time to prepare your frosting. I use a decorating bag to dispense the frosting because I like the designs you can make with the different tips. You can use a zip loc bag as well with the tip cut off. I just used vanilla frosting though any white or light yellow frosting will work for this.
I had my soon-to-be-four year old helper assist me. I scooped some frosting into my decorating bag and added a few drops of red food coloring.
Then I added some more frosting to the bag and squirted in some blue food coloring.
Finally, I squeezed the frosting through the decorating bag and piped it on my cupcakes in a circular pattern. Everyone will be slightly different and as you squeeze the frosting down in the bag, the colors will mix more.
As for the candy melt I placed in the center of each cupcake, it mostly melted. At least I satisfied my curiosity. Happy baking!
