When I got my box and opened it, I saw a stack of recipe cards. The cards feature beautiful photography and easy to follow step by step instructions.
The box comes packaged with plenty of ice so everything will be fresh when you open it. My box did not arrive until 7pm and I imagine it was sitting on a delivery truck most of the day, but everything was cold and fresh.
The Handpick Smart Groceries box that I picked came with food and recipes to make three delicious dinners – Chicken with Roasted Apples, Chicken with Tomatoes and Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Beef Saltado with Roasted Potatoes. The hardest thing I had to do was decide what to make first.
I was excited to unpack the box and see all the goodies. I noticed that the items were full sized groceries from Safeway rather than pre-portioned ingredients from a warehouse like some other meal kits. I tend to make meal planning more complicated than it needs to be, so I was surprised that I could make three totally different meals with only these ingredients.
It was hard to decide which recipe to try first but I was in more of a beef mood so I decided to make the Beef Saltado with Roasted Potatoes. Beef Saltado is a traditional Peruvian dish and I had never made it before, but the recipe cards made it look so easy that I wasn’t intimidated at all.
I was ready and excited to cook! The only things I need from my pantry were olive oil, salt and pepper. Everything else was from the kit. I preheated the oven and cut the red potatoes. I have to admit I usually purchase russet or sweet potatoes, but I am a red potato convert now! They were roasted with some olive oil and garlic and just turned out delicious. My husband even asked me how come we have never made these potatoes before!
While the potatoes were roasting, I got started on the steak.
Handpick Smart Groceries meal kit came with handy recipe cards that give you instructions and photos for every step in the cooking journey. Even if you don’t fancy yourself a cook, you can follow these cards. My favorite thing about the cards is that I get to keep them and add them to my recipe collection so that I can make the dish again in the future.
The recipe cards let you know how long prep and cook time will take so you’ll know how much time to budget for each recipe. The Beef Saltado with Roasted Potatoes had 10 minutes of prep and a 30 minute cook time.
The recipe cards say that the recipes make two servings, but I found the serving size to be more generous than that. We were able to give some to our kids as well. Each meal kit makes a lot of food!
This dish is definitely going in our meal rotation! It was delicious and not complicated to prepare at all. My husband and I were very impressed. I am excited to try the Chicken with Roasted Apples and the Chicken with Tomatoes and Garlic Mashed Potatoes next!
