Food Fun Friday: Yogurt Covered Berries on a Stick

Welcome to Food Fun Friday! Have you noticed that any food is more fun when it’s on a stick? Well I have and when I saw these yummy Frozen Yogurt-Covered Blueberry Kabobs from One Good Thing by Jillie, I knew this was a great food activity to try with my little ones.

To make yogurt covered berries you will need:

link-disclosure

  • Skewers (I cut the pointy tip off since the kids would be doing this)
  • Blueberries and Strawberries
  • Greek style yogurt (I used honey flavored)

To add some variety, I decided to add strawberries to my stick in addition to blueberries. Since the strawberries are way bigger than the blueberries, I just cut them into smaller chunks before we started the assembly.

I am always looking for teachable moments with my kids and decided that they could place the blueberries and strawberries on the stick to form a pattern. We have been doing lots of work with patterns recently (Patterned Bead Snakes) and it was nice to be able to carry that over here.

Besides creating a tasty treat, kids will also be perfecting their fine motor skills as they push each piece of fruit onto the skewer.

Once your pattern is made, you will want to roll the berries into a plate of yogurt. I used a flat plate here since it was easier to roll the stick through.

Once the kids rolled the stick through the yogurt, I placed it on another plate and popped that in the freezer for 30-40 minutes.

Because this is made with fruit and yogurt it’s a snack you can feel good giving the kids. I think this makes a great low calorie mommy snack too. Hubby suggested that the colors would make it perfect for the 4th of July. Now why didn’t I think of that?
