Do your kids struggle with big feelings? My youngest certainly does. Whatever the emotion – joy, fear, anger or sadness, my daughter feels it in a big way. They genuinely affect her. We have tried talking about her feelings countless times but sometimes the best lessons are learned in a hands-on way. That is why I was so excited when I heard about The MoodstersTM toys. These toys have made it a lot easier to have a dialogue with my daughter about her feelings. She doesn’t feel like she is getting a lecture or being forced to talk. The conversation just happens naturally through play.
The Moodsters were developed by Denise Daniels, the CEO & Founder of JellyJam Entertainment. Daniels is a Peabody award-winning broadcast journalist and is also an expert in parenting and child development. She is an author specializing in the social and emotional development of children. The Moodsters were developed based on research into emotional intelligence (EQ). EQ is the ability to recognize, understand and manage one’s emotions. As you can imagine, EQ can have a lifelong positive effect on behavior, success in school, development of empathy and physical and emotional well-being.
The Moodsters are targeted to preschoolers and consist of five lovable detectives that help kids solve the mysteries of feelings. Quigly deals with fear, Coz is all about happiness, Lolly personifies love, Razzy deals with anger and Snorf with sadness. The Moodsters are able to connect with kids because the characters and situations they find themselves in are highly relatable.
The Moodsters Talking Plush Toys are perfect for any child that loves plush toys. They are cute, cuddly and lovable. My daughter was thrilled when she first saw Quigly. She couldn’t wait to get him out of the box and cuddle him.
Imagine her surprise when she heard Quigly speak when she squeezed his belly! Quigly doesn’t just talk, he speaks words of comfort to kids who might be dealing with fear. When you squeeze him you might hear him say something like “even when I’m scared, I still have courage inside.” The Moodsters toys can teach children a vocabulary for their feelings which will help them understand, express and manage their emotions. The toys and books also can give kids simple strategies that they can use to handle the everyday challenges of growing up.
Quigly came with a small booklet that explains some ways kids can play with him and some exercises that parents can do with Quigly and their kids to help reduce fear. One of the ideas was to have your child lie down with Quigly on their belly and take some deep breaths. They can watch Quigly move up and down with each breath. This simple act can help kids calm down in the face of fear.
Quigly is not the only Moodsters Talking Plush Character out there. He is one of five Moodsters detectives who exhibit emotions that most kids are familiar with. Like Quigly, the other Moodsters Talking Plush Characters share sayings and offer suggestions to kids based on the emotions they represent. For kids, comfort is just a squeeze away! If that wasn’t enough, each of the Moodsters detectives comes with a fun activity book that will helps kids learn about their feelings and emotions in a hands-on way.
This activity book that came with Quigly is 32 pages chock-full of fun.
The book is filled with fun things to do like mazes, word searches and sticker activities.
My older daughter even got in on the fun. While my younger daughter worked in the book (and practiced her sharing skills) she discussed how she thought Quigly was feeling in various situations throughout the book.
