Summer always makes me want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. A great way to do that is by having a picnic. However, as a mom of 3 small kids, getting to a picnic location isn’t always easy. A backyard picnic is the perfect solution. But before we could have a backyard picnic, we needed some food. I headed to Safeway to stock up on picnic supplies and take advantage of the great sale they are running on dairy. When you spend $15 on participating products in a single trip through July 2nd, you’ll receive a $5.00 coupon that you can use the next time you shop. I had an idea for making cheesy bread sticks, so I picked up some Sargento Shredded Cheese while I was there. For the rest of my shopping experience you can check out my Google + album.
To create an easy backyard picnic you will need:
- Simply Orange Juice
- Fage Yogurt (raspberry flavored)
- Crescent rolls
- Sargento Shredded Cheese
- Sliced turkey or ham
- String cheese
- Magnum Ice Cream
Before the picnic, I prepared some yogurt for the kids. I bought raspberry flavored Fage yogurt and I added some fresh raspberries since my kids adore them and they were on sale at Safeway – buy 1 get 1 free.
I packed up the yogurt in some portable plastic containers. Doesn’t that look delicious?
Then I made a protein and dairy rich snack by cutting some string cheese in half and wrapping each half with some sliced turkey. I call it cheese in a blanket. What, you thought only pigs could have a blanket?
Next, I made some cheesy bread sticks. These could not be easier to make. Simply use 1/2 a container of crescent roll dough. Press the perforations together so you have a large rectangle of dough.
Place the dough into a greased pan and top with Sargento Shredded Cheese. Bake according to crescent roll package directions.
When cool, use a pizza cutter to slice into bread sticks. I loved the sharp cheddar taste of these bread sticks and the flaky crust underneath. So good!
Finally, I had all my menu items ready for a backyard picnic. The great thing about having a picnic in the backyard is that you can just pour your Simply Orange Juice into some cups and bring them outside.
My daughter brought the rest of food outside in our picnic basket while I carried the cups of juice.
The kids started out with their yummy yogurt.
They then washed it down with their juice.
Finally they enjoyed the cheesy bread sticks. These were delicious, but I seriously think everything just tastes better when you are outside on a nice day.
The kids had no idea I hid some Magnum Ice Cream in our picnic basket. What a treat! My daughter was so excited to discover there was caramel inside. She did end up a big, sticky mess, but when she cleaned up she said the ice cream was her favorite part of the picnic. You could have probably guessed that though.
It was really simple to incorporate dairy into our summer routine and make some wonderful memories with the kids on our backyard picnic.
