Learn how to make homemade butter with kids using just heavy cream and a jar. This easy hands-on activity is perfect for homeschool or classroom science.
Pour 8 ounces of heavy cream into a container with a tight-fitting lid. Add a pinch of salt if you’d like salted butter.
Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously. After about 7–10 minutes, the cream will thicken, then separate into a solid (butter) and liquid (buttermilk).
Pour off the buttermilk. Rinse the butter under cold water and gently press or stir it to remove any remaining liquid. This helps it stay fresh longer.
Enjoy immediately or refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes
Use a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid to prevent spills, especially when kids are helping.
Encourage children to shake with both hands and take turns if needed.
If shaking becomes tiring, take short breaks and continue until the butter separates.
Store homemade butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
The liquid you pour off is buttermilk - you can save it to use in baking.
