Instructions

  • Pour 8 ounces of heavy cream into a container with a tight-fitting lid. Add a pinch of salt if you’d like salted butter.
  • Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously. After about 7–10 minutes, the cream will thicken, then separate into a solid (butter) and liquid (buttermilk).
  • Pour off the buttermilk. Rinse the butter under cold water and gently press or stir it to remove any remaining liquid. This helps it stay fresh longer.
  • Enjoy immediately or refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

  • Use a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid to prevent spills, especially when kids are helping.
  • Encourage children to shake with both hands and take turns if needed.
  • If shaking becomes tiring, take short breaks and continue until the butter separates.
  • Store homemade butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • The liquid you pour off is buttermilk - you can save it to use in baking.
