I had some cream leftover from another recipe and decided it would be fun to make butter with the kids. I have been wanting to try and make flavored butter for some time, but I didn't think my kids would like it with rosemary or chives. Since they are fans of pesto sauce it seemed only natural to make pesto butter! We are all about family friendly recipes here at Mess for Less and this one really fits the bill. Not only is it easy to make (3 ingredients!) but kids can help with every step. If you try this Pesto Butter Recipe, it would be yummy with this Popover Recipe.

Make Pesto Butter With Kids - this simple 3 ingredient recipe is super fun for kids to make and it tastes amazing spread on bread. Yum!

    You will need:

    • 1 cup of heavy cream
    • ⅛ teaspoon of salt
    • 1 tablespoon pesto
    • Container
    pesto butter ingredients

You can use a glass jar with a screw on lid to make butter, but since my kids would be helping me, I just used a plastic container. Pour one cup of heavy cream into your container along with the salt if you would like salted butter.

If you are using something without a screw on lid you can tape the edges to make sure there is no leaking when you are shaking the cream. I just used packing tape.

The most fun thing about making your own butter is shaking it. Of course, there are easier ways to make butter using a mixer, but there is no cooler way to make butter with kids than the shaking method.

The shaking takes a little bit of time. We shook for 10-12 minutes before we got butter. It helped to have the kids take turns.

At some point in the shaking process, the liquid will start to sound like a solid in the container. At this point, open up the container and pour out the excess liquid.

Place cover back on and shake for a few more minutes until the butter comes together and looks like this.

Now you've made butter! Pretty fun and easy huh? To take it a step further and kick it up a notch, add a tablespoon of pesto sauce to the butter and stir. You can add more pesto if you want for a deeper green color and more pesto flavor. I find that a tablespoon adds the perfect amount of flavor for us.
