Why this Monte Cristo sandwich is awesome
Typically, a Monte Cristo sandwich is dipped in egg and fried. To eliminate this cumbersome step, I have used a waffle maker instead. That's right, a waffle maker can be used to make amazing sandwiches! Check out my favorite waffle maker.

Monte Cristo sandwich ingredients
- sliced bread, basic sandwich bread works best
- sliced deli Swiss cheese
- sliced deli ham
- butter, softened
- syrup
- fresh berries, if desired
- powdered sugar for dusting
How to make an easy Monte Cristo sandwich
Turn on you waffle maker. Butter both slices of bread on one side. We will be using butter in place of dipping the sandwich in egg. Place buttered side of bread down on waffle maker.
Some people spread mayonnaise and mustard on the other side of the bread, and the sandwich tastes great this way too.
Top the bread with Swiss cheese.
Add sliced ham on top of the Swiss cheese.
Butter another piece of bread and add it to the top of the ham with the butter side up.
Close the waffle maker and cook the sandwich in waffle maker until bread is crispy and cheese is melted.
Carefully remove the sandwich from waffle maker.
You can dust with powdered sugar and top with syrup or serve with syrup on the side for dipping.
This Monte Cristo waffle sandwich is best served warm. Enjoy!
You can also cook this on the stove top but using a waffle maker is super easy, plus I just love the grill marks. Be sure to also check out our Maple French Toast Casserole.

Soft white bread works best, though I have made this with sour dough bread which has given it a great taste as well.
Since this dish is sweet and on the heavier side, I like to keep it like with a plate of fresh fruit.
While many enjoying dipping the sandwich in maple syrup, some prefer raspberry jam.
