Over the holidays we had lots of family come to stay with us. These holiday visits are among our favorite times of the year, as we get to spend time with family that live far away. My sister-in-law did a cute project with the kids that was a big hit and super easy too! So she and four kids - my three girls and my niece, made these yummy hot chocolate spoons. Never heard of hot chocolate spoons before? Well, in addition to looking cute, they make a yummy cup of hot chocolate. Simply deposit a spoon (or two) into a mug of hot milk and stir. As you stir, the chocolate and marshmallows melt, creating the perfect cup of hot chocolate. If you are having more chocolate marshmallow cravings, check out our Crescent Smore's Bars Recipe and our Easy Hot Chocolate Truffles.

These hot chocolate spoons are so cute and make a great gift idea! Hot cocoa spoons are simple to make with kids and they make a yummy cup of hot chocolate.

    Hot Chocolate Spoons

    You will need:

    • Plastic spoons (15-20)
    • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
    • Assorted sprinkles
    • Toothpicks
    • Black food coloring
    • Bag of mini marshmallows
    • Crushed candy canes

*Since this activity involves hot water and hot chocolate, an adult must help and supervise.*

Kids will use a toothpick dipped in black food coloring to create a snowman face on mini marshmallows. You will need one snowman face for each spoon you plan to make.

After you create snowman faces, you will need an equal number of bodies. Use a toothpick dipped in black food coloring to make some buttons on a mini marshmallow. Then use some longer sprinkles to make the arms. Simply push two sprinkles into the sides of a mini marshmallow to make the arms.

Melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler. If you don't have one, you can simply place the chocolate in a glass bowl and place it in boiling water until the chocolate melts.

Scoop some melted chocolate onto each plastic spoon covering the entire inside part of the spoon. Do not dip the spoon in the chocolate or place any chocolate on the back of the spoon. Push marshmallow faces and bodies into the the chocolate on the spoon to make a snowman. You can also add crushed candy canes, sprinkles and colored sugar to the chocolate.

Place the hot chocolate spoons on a parchment lined tray to dry and refrigerate until the chocolate hardens. Ours stayed in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.

My sister in law mentioned that you can cut some slits in the bottom of a paper cup and push the bottom of the spoons through the slits to create a hot chocolate spoon bouquet. What a sweet gift!

I love how easy it is to make a variety of hot chocolate spoons. If snowmen aren't your thing, you can just use crushed candy canes or colorful sprinkles. For more fun snowman treats, check out this Christmas Cookies TikTok Hack.

    FAQs For Hot Chocolate Spoons

How do you use a hot chocolate spoon?

Just heat up a mug of milk, stir in one of these chocolatey spoons, and watch the magic happen. The chocolate will melt and turn your milk into a rich, cozy cup of cocoa.

Can I add other flavors or toppings?

Definitely! Mini marshmallows, toffee bits, or a sprinkle of sea salt are all fun options. Just make sure any add-ins are small enough to melt or dissolve nicely in hot milk.

    How do I store these?

Once the chocolate has hardened completely, store the spoons in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay fresh for up to 2 weeks. If your house is really warm, the fridge works too!
