Ingredients for Breakfast Casserole with Sausage
- Sausage - I used ground pork. If you are looking for a healthier alternative, use turkey sausage or a plant-based variety.
- Onion - Diced and cooked with the sausage.
- Crescent dough - You can use crescent rolls and not separate them into triangles or use a crescent dough sheet.
- Eggs - Provide more protein for this recipe and help the casserole to set.
- Milk - Whole milk or 2% milk works fine.
- Sour cream - Adds a tangy flavor to the eggs.
- Salt - Since the sausage and cheese in this recipe are salty, you won't be adding much additional salt.
- Pepper - Add more if you like things a little spicy.
- Cheddar cheese - Shredded. You can also use a mix of different cheeses. I used a cheddar jack mix.

Tips for Making A Breakfast Casserole with Sausage and Eggs
Tip 1: When the casserole comes out of the oven, let it rest for a few minutes. Letting it sit allows it to be fully set so that the slices will come out cleaner when they are cut. This makes for a pretty presentation.
Tip 2: Along those lines, this casserole is easier to slice if you use a sharp knife. It will cut through the crispy cheese layer on top without making a mess of the eggs. After making such a breakfast masterpiece, you don't want to struggle to get the first piece out. You don't want to end up with a pile of scrambled breakfast when you’re looking to impress.
How Do I Know the Casserole Is Done?
You'll know that this breakfast casserole with sausage is fully cooked when the eggs are firm and not jiggly. This ensures a perfectly baked dish every time.
The top layer of the casserole should be a lovely golden brown. To test the casserole, insert a knife into the center. If it glides smoothly and comes out clean then you know that your casserole is fully cooked and ready to be enjoyed.
What Goes Good With Breakfast Casserole?
A delicious Breakfast Casserole pairs wonderfully with a number of sides. For a lighter option, you might enjoy a bowl of mixed fresh fruit or a fruit smoothie. You can also serve this with toast with butter and jam. If you are looking for a more savory side, consider crispy bacon, hash browns, or breakfast potatoes. And of course, no breakfast is complete without a hot cup of coffee or tea.
How Do You Store This Casserole?
When it comes to storage, keeping the casserole fresh and delicious is key. You want to be sure that any leftovers are properly stored to maintain their flavor and texture. Make sure you let the casserole cool down to room temperature before you store it in the refrigerator.
Once it has cooled, you can cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap or a cover. If you don't have that much remaining, you can transfer individual portions into an airtight container. You'll want to refrigerate the casserole within two hours of cooking, to maintain its quality. It can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Can You Make This Casserole Ahead of Time?
