Why you'll love these puff pastry donuts
- Just 3 ingredients and very little prep time
- Easy way to make crisp and sweet donuts
- Can change the topping easily for different flavor combos
Ingredients
- A sheet of puff pastry - I used Pepperidge Farm
- Powdered Sugar
- Canola oil
Helpful tools
- Donut Cutter or biscuit cutter or a mason jar lid and a water bottle lid
- slotted spoon
- wire cooling rack
- baking sheet
- paper towels
How to make homemade donuts
Heat 3 cups of canola oil over medium high heat.
Place a cooling rack on a baking sheet. (Line this with a paper towel or parchment paper to make clean up easier!)
Roll out a puff pastry sheet so that it is somewhat thinner than when it comes from the package.
You probably have cookie cutters, but most people don't have a doughnut cutter. If you don't, that's OK! Puff pastry dough may be cut into rounds using a big jar lid.
You can use a small lid, like one from a water bottle, to cut small holes in the center of each donut. The small lid will make donut holes.
Drop the donuts one at a time into the hot oil.
Cooking time should be around 30 seconds per side. When the donuts are golden brown on one side, flip them. Remember to cook the doughnut holes as well. They'll cook quicker if you drop them in the oil, wait 20 seconds, and then remove them with a slotted spoon.
When you remove the donuts from the oil, put them aside and allow them to cool on the wire cooling rack.
Sprinkle powdered sugar over the donuts after about 5 minutes of cooling, and serve immediately!
You can serve the donuts on a tray for a special breakfast or snack.
