    Breakfast Casserole with Bread Cubes

This casserole is super popular because it is cozy and satisfying. The hearty sausage, melty gooey cheese, and cubes of bread work together to create a medley of flavors that will start your morning on a delicious note! It also makes the best leftovers whether you are refrigerating it to use the next day or freezing it for later. It makes a great Christmas morning casserole.

You can even prep this casserole the night before (don't worry, I'll tell you how) and get some extra sleep in the morning. A yummy breakfast and more sleep? That is a win-win in my book!

Ingredients for Breakfast Casserole with Bread

    • Ground breakfast sausage - If you are looking for a healthier option, turkey sausage is a great alternative.
    • Large eggs - Use room temperature eggs for best results. They will make the casserole light and fluffy.
    • Shredded cheddar cheese - I like to use sharp cheddar cheese for the depth of flavor it provides, but try experimenting with different cheeses like Mexican cheese or Pepper Jack for a twist with a kick.
    • Milk - Whole milk produces a casserole that is a bit creamier, but I usually use 2% milk with good results.
    • Salt and pepper - To taste.
    • White bread - A thicker sliced bread works well as does day-old bread. The bread will be toasted and cut into 1-inch cubes.
    • Dijon mustard - If you don't have Dijon, you can substitute a pinch of dry mustard.

How to Make Breakfast Casserole with Bread Slices

Making this yummy breakfast casserole doesn't need to be complicated! Start by cooking the ground sausage until it's perfectly browned. Then toast your bread and cut it into one-inch cubes. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and your seasonings.

Add the yummy cooked sausage and crispy bread cubes to the bowl with the egg mixture. Add some cheese and mix until all the ingredients have combined. If you plan to cook this soon, pour the mixture into a greased 9x9 pan, cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. This will allow the break to soak up the egg mixture which will result in a delicious casserole. Don't forget to add some more cheddar to the top before cooking!

If you want to make this casserole an overnight breakfast casserole with bread, then simply place the baking dish in the refrigerator overnight. Before cooking, sprinkle the remainder of the cheese on top.

    steps to make breakfast casserole

Bake your casserole until golden brown and enjoy serving this to your family. Don't forget to grab a piece for yourself as well!

How Do You Make an Overnight Breakfast Casserole With Bread?

If you like to plan for those busy mornings, you can make this recipe the night before. Simply follow the directions and prepare as normal. Only instead of placing it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes, you will keep it in there, covered, overnight.

This way, while you're snug in your bed dreaming, your casserole is getting all the more flavorful and ready to cook when you wake. That means you get to hit that snooze button one more time and still enjoy a warm, home-cooked meal.

    FAQs for Bread Breakfast Casserole

How Do You Store This Breakfast Casserole?

If you want to enjoy this casserole at a later date, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Then heat in the microwave or oven when you are ready to use.

You can also freeze leftovers by slicing them into individual servings and placing them in a convenient zip top bag. These frozen portions can be safely stored for up to 2 months so you can enjoy them at a later time with little effort.

Can You Make This Casserole Gluten-Free?

Just because you are gluten-free doesn't mean you can't enjoy this hearty breakfast casserole. This recipe uses white bread but sliced gluten-free bread can be substituted.

With a tasty, quality gluten-free bread you won't even miss the wheat! Whether you're celiac, gluten-sensitive, or just cutting back on gluten, you can enjoy a delicious casserole.

Tips for Making an Easy Breakfast Casserole with Bread

Tip 1: Use a knife to test for doneness. When a knife is inserted in the center of the casserole, it should come out clean.

Tip 2: Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before you serve it. Trust me, it will be easier to slice and serve.

Tip 3: Be sure to whisk the eggs and milk thoroughly and take the time to let your bread fully absorb the egg mixture. Do not skip this step if you like a custardy texture in your casserole.

    Recipes to Make With Bread

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound pork breakfast sausage
    • 5 large eggs
    • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
    • ½ cup whole milk
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • 4 slices white bread cut into 1-inch cubes and toasted
    • ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 9x9 casserole dish with cooking spray.
    • In a skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until it's brown and crumbly. Break up the sausage as it cooks. Drain. Set aside.
    • Toast 4 slices of bread and cut it into 1 inch cubes.
    • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and Dijon mustard until well combined.
    • Add the cooked sausage to the bowl along with the bread cubes, and ¾ cup of shredded cheddar. Mix everything well.
    • Pour into greased casserole dish and cover with plastic wrap.
    • Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
    • Remove from refrigerator, uncover and top with remaining ¾ cup of shredded cheese.
    • Bake for 40-50 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
    • Let rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

    Notes

    • Test for doneness using a knife inserted into the center of the casserole. If it comes out clean, the casserole is done.
    • To make the casserole easier to slice, let it rest for a few minutes before cutting into it.
    • Be sure to let the bread fully absorb the egg mixture for a custard-like texture to your casserole.
