Make Ahead Breakfast Casserole
This breakfast casserole that can be prepared the night before is not just a crowd-pleaser; it's a time saver. You assemble it the night before and then pop it in the oven the next morning or when you are ready for brunch. What could be easier?
Ingredients for Overnight Breakfast Casserole
- Ground breakfast sausage: I used pork sausage which gives a juicy and hearty flavor to the casserole. You can also use ground turkey or chicken sausage to provide protein to the recipe.
- Mustard powder: Dry mustard helps to balance the rich flavors of the pork and cheese.
- Eggs: I used large eggs which cook up nice and fluffy in this recipe.
- Milk: Adds creaminess and moisture to the casserole. You can use whole milk or 2%.
- Garlic and cheese croutons: These provide a cheesy and garlic flavor, plus they save you time preparing bread for the casserole.
- Cheddar cheese: Shredded. I used a sharp cheddar cheese. You can use other cheese varieties as well such as Monterey Jack cheese or Mexican cheese.
- Salt and Pepper: to taste.
Can You Make a Casserole With Raw Eggs Ahead of Time?
You might want to prepare a casserole ahead of time for many reasons. Maybe you're planning a lazy Sunday brunch, or you're just trying to simplify busy weekday mornings.
You can make a casserole with raw eggs ahead of time. It is a great way to save time and reduce stress. It feels good to wake up and remember that a hearty and delicious breakfast is already prepared.
You will follow the recipe as normal, but hold off on baking it. Instead, cover your casserole dish and store it in the refrigerator. It's essential to keep the dish refrigerated until it's ready to be cooked. This keeps the eggs safe for consumption.
How To Make An Overnight Breakfast Casserole
One of the reasons people love overnight casseroles is the convenience. You can prepare them the evening before. This means you get to wake up to a hassle-free morning with a delicious meal to be enjoyed. I especially love a casserole like this for Christmas breakfast.
Refrigerating the egg bake overnight allows the bread to soak up the egg mixture and flavors. Simply cover your casserole dish and place it in the refrigerator until the next morning when you are ready to eat.
In the morning all there is to do is preheat your oven and cook. This easy casserole cooks for 45 minutes covered in foil and then 20 minutes uncovered.
If you'd like you can add some chopped green onions for garnish when the casserole is ready.
Tips for Making a Breakfast Casserole Ahead of Time
Tip 1: Feel free to substitute a hot or spicy sausage to add some heat to this dish.
Tip 2: You can customize this casserole. You can bulk it up with vegetables such as bell peppers, mushrooms, or onions. These veggies add both flavor and nutrition. Is sausage not your thing? Swap it for an equal amount of bacon or ham.
How Long Can a Breakfast Casserole Sit in the Fridge Before Baking?
Luckily you've got a pretty decent window to work with. You should cook the casserole within 24 hours after putting it together to ensure it is fresh.
Why 24 hours? This timeframe keeps everything safe for consumption. When you are dealing with perishable items like eggs and dairy, timing is important.
Remember, that making a meal ahead of time doesn't need to be stressful or complicated. Using the 24-hour guideline with this casserole recipe helps you whip up a tasty breakfast casserole that is ready to eat when you are.
What's the Best Way to Store This Overnight Breakfast Casserole After Cooking?
When you are done eating and ready to put away the leftovers, you can store this casserole in an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to 4 days.
You can also freeze leftovers from this recipe which is a big help if you don't think you will be eating it in the near future. To freeze this casserole, divide it into individual portions and wrap portions tightly in foil or plastic wrap. You can also place the servings in a zip-top bag. Overnight casserole can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months after it's been cooked.
When you're ready to eat it, simply thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and then reheat it in the microwave until it's cooked through.
