You will be baking this tater tot breakfast casserole in a 9 x 13 casserole dish. My favorite casserole dish is this one by Anchor Hocking. I love it because it comes with a carrier so I can easily bring my breakfast casserole to gatherings or meetings.

Why you are going to love this tater tot casserole recipe

My favorite thing about this breakfast casserole with tater tots is that you can prepare it the night before, place in the refrigerator and bake it up in the morning. Breakfast really doesn't get much easier than that. This is classic comfort food that is perfect for a chilly morning.

    Ingredients

    • eggs
    • sausage links
    • milk
    • Tater tots
    • shredded cheese
    • kosher salt
    • pepper

How to make this tater tot hotdish

You can brown your sausage over medium heat in a large skillet or in the microwave.

This dish starts with browned sausage that is cut and spread into a greased casserole pan.

Next, you'll mix the milk, eggs, salt and pepper in a large bowl and pour them over the sausage in the baking dish.

Now it is time to sprinkle on the cheddar cheese. If you will be serving this the next morning like I did, cover and refrigerate at this point. You will be performing the next steps in the morning.

    tater tot casserole

Spread the tater tots on top of the cheese layer.

Add the remainder of the cheese on top and bake.

This tater tot casserole did not last long when I served it. I was lucky to snatch up a piece and it was SO good. The flavor can't be beat!

Not sure what I did wrong but 40 minutes definitely wasn't long enough. I had to cook another 30 minutes for the eggs to be done. Otherwise delicious!

THANK YOU for this recipe! I made two pans on Sunday and cooked them. The goal was for my family to be able to take pieces to reheat for a quick week day breakfast. This is working perfectly and it is FREAKING DELICIOUS. I have been eating it for breakfast and lunch. I substituted cut up bacon for sausage because that is what I had on hand. SO GOOD.

I'm planning on making this for dinner tomorrow night. I usually half recipes since there is just 2 of us, but 3 eggs doesn't seem like enough for the two of us. Is it pretty thin?

    19. Vicky @ Mess For Less

      December 30, 2014 at 5:54 pm

Carissa, It is not thin. You can make the full recipe and freeze the leftovers. It holds up well. Thanks for visiting!

Donna, this is not usually something I eat while watching calories as it is a bit indulgent. If you check out the calories for each of the ingredients you can roughly calculate something for the entire dish.

Very yummy and simple. I added a pinch of sea salt and about 1 teaspoon of black pepper and made my biscuits from scratch. Will consider serving again for potluck one Sunday morning at church.

There's just two of us at our house, so this is a great breakfast casserole to last for the week. Individual servings froze well and that was so helpful for having a quick breakfast on busy mornings.

Agree! I am SOOOO frustrated right now!! This casserole has been in the oven for 40 minutes and it is STILL soupy!! My family is hungry. They have been patiently waiting. 😩 I’m disgusted! One cup of milk is WAY TOO MUCH milk for 6 eggs!!!!! Horrible experience with this recipe!!! And I hate to cook! I was trying to do something nice for my family while we quarantine over this deadly virus. 😩😩😩
