Apple crisp is one of my favorite apple desserts and this Homemade Apple Crisp is one that we make often during apple season. The apples are spiced and cooked to perfection and the crumbly topping gives it just the right amount of crunch. Top this with some ice cream and prepare for dessert heaven!

    ⭐Why this recipe works

    • Easier to make than apple pie and just as tasty
    • It's amazing topped with vanilla ice cream
    • Perfect spiced dessert for fall

    🥣Ingredients

    • Apples - We used Granny Smith. Peel, core, and slice apples
    • Granulated sugar - Adds sweetness to the dish and pairs well with the tartness of the apples.
    • All-purpose flour - Used in the oat topping.
    • Cinnamon and nutmeg - I love the rich fall flavors these spices bring to the apple crisp.
    • Oats - I use quick oats for this recipe. You can use old-fashioned oats as well but avoid steel-cut oats.
    • Light brown sugar - Adds to the richness of flavor of the dish.
    • Butter - Helps to create the crunchy topping.

    📋Step by Step Instructions

STEP 1: Before you start assembling your ingredients, you'll want to preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Peel, core, and slice 5 apples. This tool makes it super easy.

STEP 2: Pour the sliced apples into a 9x13 inch baking dish or a square baking dish. Combine the white sugar, ½ teaspoon of flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl and sprinkle over the apples. Stir together so that the sugar mixture is evenly distributed.

STEP 3: To make the oat topping - the best part of apple crisp - combine the oats with ½ cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and melted butter.

STEP 4: Use a fork to mix these ingredients together until they form crumbs.

The warm spiced apples that have been cooked to perfection and the crisp, sweet toppings, make this the best apple crisp recipe that I have ever tried.

    👩🏻‍🍳Expert Tips

Tip 1: If you want to do this simple apple crisp right, you'll serve it warm and topped with quality vanilla ice cream. If you want a little extra goodness, drizzle some caramel sauce on top.

Tip 2: If you prefer a nuttier taste, you can add ½ cup of chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts) when you are making the oat topping.

    🤷🏻‍♀️Recipe FAQs

What are the best apples to make apple crisp?

You can use a variety of apples but the ones that work best are Granny Smith apples, Jonagold, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn. You want to make sure to use an apple that will not turn mushy when baked.

Should you peel apples for apple crisp?

Yes. Peeling the apples gives the apple crumble a better texture. It also makes it easier to eat.

How do you store apple crisp?

Place it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days. To reheat apple crisp you can place it in the microwave for 30 seconds.
