Pie Crust Cherry Turnovers
Cherry turnovers are popular because they're a simple way to enjoy the taste of cherry pie without making a pie from scratch. I don't often have the time to bake a pie, but since this recipe takes minutes, it is easier to find time to make it. The sweet and tart flavor of cherries pairs beautifully with the crisp, golden pie crust.
One thing I love about these cherry turnovers is their size. The smaller size of these cherry hand pies (as opposed to a slice of pie) works as a form of portion control. Because each turnover is just a couple of delightful bites, you get to enjoy this treat without worrying about overindulging.
Ingredients For Cherry Pie Turnovers
- Pie Crust - The wrapping for our delicious cherry pie filling. Using refrigerated pie crust makes this recipe come together in minutes.
- Cherry Pie Filling - They sell pre-made cherry pie filling in 21 oz cans, though you won't use all of it in this recipe. The filling provides this recipe with a burst of color and a sweet and tart flavor.
- Egg - You will use a beaten egg to add a glaze to the cherry turnovers. This helps them to turn a golden brown when baking.
How to Make Cherry Turnovers With Pie Crust
Refrigerated pie crust comes in a package of 2, and you will be using both for this recipe. Depending on the size of your cookie cutter, you will get 3-4 turnovers from each pie crust.
You can always gather the scraps of dough that are leftover, combine them, and roll them out until you have enough dough to make another circle.
Making these cherry turnovers with pie crust is as easy as unrolling the pie crusts and cutting out dough circles. You then fill half of each circle of dough with some tasty cherry pie filling and fold over the remaining dough and seal it.
To help with clean up you can place the turnovers on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Then use a pastry brush to brush some egg on the top of the turnovers and bake. These cherry hand pies will be hot when they come out of the oven, so let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
Tips for Making Cherry Pie Turnovers
Tip 1: When you are making the turnovers, be sure to seal the the dough well to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking. You want to keep all that yummy filling in the turnover, not on the baking pan.
Tip 2: Feel free to switch up the filling in these turnovers. If you are not a cherry fan, you can easily swap them out for blueberry, apple, or peach.
Tip 3: Don't have a round cookie cutter? No problem! A round glass with a large opening works in a pinch for cutting out perfect circles. Who knew?
Tip 4: Make sure to cut slits in the top of each turnover before baking so steam can escape.
Tip 5: Let the refrigerated pie crust sit at room temperature for a few minutes to make it easier to unroll.
How Do You Store Cherry Turnovers With Pie Crust?
Now, after you've enjoyed a turnover (or two) you might be wondering how to store any remaining turnovers. To store these cherry turnovers, place them in an airtight container. They will stay fresh at room temperature for up to 3 days.
If you'd like them to keep a bit longer, place them in the refrigerator instead, where they can keep for up to a week. Now you can enjoy this cherry turnover recipe a little longer without sacrificing taste.
When you are ready to eat them again, simply pop the turnovers in the microwave for 15-20 seconds to warm up. Just let them cool a little because they will be hot!
