Fried Apple Pie Wontons
I love the idea of using wonton wrappers for desserts since they use a common ingredient in a new way. Why have wonton desserts grown in popularity? One of the big reasons is because they are very versatile and convenient allowing you to experiment with different fillings.
The wrappers can hold a variety of fillings, such as fruit or chocolate. Once you fry or bake the wrappers, they become crispy, which offers a satisfying contrast to the soft fillings inside. Their smaller size means you can indulge your sweet tooth guilt-free.
Don't have wonton wrappers? You can still enjoy the flavor of apple pie with these Apple Pie Cinnamon Rolls.
Ingredients For Apple Pie Fried Wonton Recipe
- Apple pie filling - A 21 oz can. You can make your own apple pie filling if you want, but canned filling is a great shortcut.
- Wonton wrappers - You can find square wonton wrappers in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores.
- Oil for frying - I used canola oil but peanut oil or vegetable oil would also work.
- Powdered sugar - Will be sprinkled on the apple wontons for added sweetness. Also makes a pretty finishing touch.
How to Make Apple Pie Fried Wontons
This recipe is easy to make. Open your can of apple pie filling and scoop some into the center of a wonton wrapper.
Then fold the wrapper, keeping all the gooey apple filling inside. Run a little water on your finger along the edges of the wonton to seal this.
Prepare all your wontons, and then get ready for frying. I use a deep fryer to make mine since it cooks the wontons quickly and produces super crispy wontons. Once the oil reaches its desired temperature, add the wontons a few at a time and cook until crispy.
When the fruit wontons are cooked, remove them and let them drain on paper towels. Then, add a generous sprinkling of confectioner's sugar and serve.
Tips for Making This Apple Pie Fried Wonton Recipe
Tip 1: You'll want to be sure not to overfill the wontons or they can burst open during frying. This will ruin your wonton dessert and cause a big mess.
Tip 2: Fry the wontons in small batches and use a thermometer to make sure the oil temperature remains at 350 degrees. A deep fryer thermometer comes in very handy.
Tip 3: If you can't find wonton wrappers at your grocery store, you can try an Asian market. Egg roll wrappers can also be cut into squares.
Can I Bake These Apple Wontons Instead of Frying?
Yes, you can totally bake these apple wontons instead of deep frying them. This is great if you want to make these but are looking for a lighter and less messy option.
To bake these, simply follow the directions until you get to the cooking part. Then just spray the wontons with cooking spray before they go in the oven to make sure they turn out golden and crispy.
Bake them at 375 degrees F for 12-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them as they cook to make sure they don't burn.
Can I Make Fried Wontons Ahead of Time?
If you are busy or want to serve a lot of these at a party or for a crowd, you can assemble them up to a day ahead of time and store them covered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator. Then, when you are ready to use them, you can fry them according to the recipe directions.
Can I Fry These Without a Deep Fryer?
So, you want to make these crispy apple wontons, but you don't have a deep fryer. That's not a problem! You can pan-fry these by using a large skillet or frying pan with high sides so the oil won't splatter out. Fill the pan with about ½ inches of oil and heat it over medium-high heat.
If you have a thermometer, heat vegetable oil to 350 degrees. If you don't, test the oil by dropping a small piece of wonton wrapper in. If the wonton sizzles right away, it is ready for frying. Fry the wontons for 1-2 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown.
